Can believers be influenced and their souls corrupted by the darkness of the age? Yes! A careless Christian, a lukewarm one, a prayerless one who lacks strong spirituality, one who is not genuinely born again, can fall into darkness. Many already belong to the night.
Nonetheless, here is the good news: Jesus saves! Jesus is the salvation of mankind, and God has ordained him as our saviour and deliverer from all areas of our fall from God.
“Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12
The only problem with many believers is lack of knowledge. Also, they fall away from God and refuse to come out of darkness.
I do not write to unbelievers because all who do not believe in Christ cannot escape the dark hold of Satan.
Now, the difference between sin and darkness is that sin is natural to man, while Satanic darkness is a reality that is made possible by demonic powers.
To break out of sin, one must surrender to Jesus and walk in the Spirit. To be free from darkness, one must surrender to Jesus and pray fervently, denouncing Satan.
But we know that many have decided to remain entangled because their deeds were evil. For this, many, although having seen the light, have rejected him to their ultimate condemnation.
And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practising evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.” John 3:19-21
People must know that God does not condemn those who dwell in darkness, not yet. The Bible agrees that it is the Devil who instigates their activities over there.
He manipulates their spirits and souls for his wicked works. This is why no one who lives in darkness can say no to being used by the devil.
Any believer who has been entangled and wants to break free from the kingdom of darkness and escape the corruption of it must,
1. Know the finished work of Christ
The first step to overcoming darkness and breaking its yoke is knowledge. We must understand that Christ’s work on the cross covers every aspect of the human fall.
Jesus is not just our saviour from sin but also from guilt, death, sickness, darkness and all the powers of the enemy. And on the cross, Jesus cried, “It is finished!“
It is finished implies that the work he came to do is complete. Sin can now be forgiven and blotted out. Darkness can be forgiven and blotted out. Yokes can now be broken. The captives of the strong men can now be delivered. The work is done, the price is paid, and it is finished.
This is where our victory comes from against Satan and all that he will ever do against mankind. If people understand this, there is no covenant of hell they cannot come out of, the price is paid.
2. Know the Power of Christ
The second knowing is to know the power of the God of ages over the enemy.
One of the greatest tools the enemy has used to keep men under his rule is fear. He makes them feel as if they can never escape his shadow completely.
Some societies scare their captives by threatening to kill them if they tell on them or attempt to leave. Believers who do not know the power of God will live in fear and captivity.
Here is my rebuttal: Unless you are venturing out into open space, there’s no need to live in fear of them. If you step out and wholeheartedly return to Christ, He will not only forgive, but He will also protect His own.
The power of the Lord is unmatched by all the forces of darkness combined. He is a steadfast rock for His children. Life and death are in His hands; those whom the Lord proclaims will live shall certainly live, for the enemy cannot touch them.
All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. John 6:37
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. John 10:28
And concerning whether one can fully break free from the kingdom of darkness and nullify all ties, it is written:
“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36
Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered? But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered. Isaiah 49:24-25
3. Break the ties, denounce the covenants, and null the entanglements through fervent prayers
With faith anchored in the finished work of Christ, and having known the power of the God we serve, we then generate power to counteract the power of Satan and pull down the strongholds of darkness over our souls.
Prayer is the engine that generates great power against all the powers of the enemy. And when mingled with fasting, prayer generates very great power to cast down darkness.
With the weapon of prayer and fasting, we can destroy the power of the demons and dark magic that causes the manifestations of darkness. Prayer also nullifies the charms, food, and poison that were used to galvanise our experience of darkness.
With prayer in the name of Jesus, we can also denounce the covenants and break all manner of ties with the kingdom of darkness.
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God…” 2 Corinthians 10:4-5
